Katherine de Shazer

My work is driven by a fascination with light, color, and texture and their relationship to nature, the cosmos, and human experience. Over the years I have explored a variety of mediums, including stained glass, egg tempera, painting, and fiber arts, as ways to translate these relationships into visual form.

Stained glass was my primary focus for many years, from 1972 through 2019. During that time I developed a lamination technique that layers broken pieces of stained glass onto textured clear glass to create more fluid expressions of color and light. My study of traditional egg tempera iconography introduced me to natural pigments and the symbolic language of color, deepening my understanding of translucency, opacity, and light.

In recent years I have returned to fiber arts, including felting, weaving, and fabric collage. These processes allow me to explore color and light through texture and dimensional form.

Across all mediums, my work is an ongoing exploration of how the language of nature, mystery, and inner experience can be expressed through shape, color, and symbol.
